Academic Intervention at AGS
At American Gulf School, we believe every student can grow when provided with the right support at the right time. Our Academic Intervention Program is designed to identify learning needs early, provide targeted support, and help students build the confidence and skills needed to succeed.
Using a data-informed approach, our team reviews multiple measures including MAP, NGRT, classroom performance, teacher observations, and student learning profiles to determine the most appropriate interventions for each student.
How We Support Students
Intervention support is embedded within the school day and tailored to individual areas of need. Students may receive:
- Small-group intervention sessions
- Literacy and reading support
- Language-based intervention in English and Arabic
- Targeted academic skill development
- Classroom accommodations and progress monitoring
- Structured support focused on confidence, independence, and engagement
Early Years & Primary (KG–PYP)
In the Early Years and Primary School, intervention focuses on building strong foundational literacy and language skills. AGS utilizes the Read Write Inc. program to support early reading development, phonics, fluency, and comprehension.
Our intervention approach prioritizes early identification and timely support to ensure students develop the core skills necessary for long-term academic success.
In addition, the school has introduced an Arabic phonics program that focuses on developing students’ phonological awareness and foundational reading skills in Arabic. AGS also conducts specialized assessments in phonics and across all Arabic language skills. The results of these assessments are used to group students according to their learning needs and phonics levels. Assessment data is further used to provide targeted intervention and support through the Arabic Intervention Team and the Arabic Reading Specialist, ensuring that students receive timely and effective support to strengthen their literacy and language development.
Middle Years (MYP)
Interventions are designed to help students access increasingly complex academic content while developing independent learning strategies and stronger engagement across subjects.
NC Intervention
At this stage, a flexible, student-centered intervention program is implemented to address learners’ actual academic needs. Support is delivered both within and beyond classroom time, creating a rich, engaging learning environment.
Intervention is provided through three progressive levels that account for individual differences. The program relies on educational games and interactive activities that transform learning into a meaningful, lived experience, structured as follows:
- Level 1: Arabic Language Buds
- Level 2: The Fragrance of Arabic
- Level 3: The Creative Writer
This approach is grounded in early identification, systematic planning for intervention, and timely support to ensure students develop the foundational skills essential for long-term academic success.
The program is delivered by specialized intervention staff who closely monitor student progress, coordinate continuously with classroom teachers, and apply evidence-based intervention strategies to ensure measurable educational impact.
Specialized Support Team
AGS has dedicated Reading Specialists in both English and Arabic who work collaboratively with classroom teachers, coordinators, and the Inclusion Team to provide targeted and linguistically appropriate intervention.
This collaborative model ensures that support is responsive, individualized, and aligned with each student’s academic profile.
