Modern Foreign Languages at American Gulf School

At American Gulf School, we believe that learning a new language is a gateway to becoming a global citizen—someone who communicates across cultures, values diversity, and engages with the world in thoughtful and meaningful ways.

Our Modern Foreign Languages (MFL) programme offers students the opportunity to study Chinese and French, two globally significant languages that open doors to international cultures, communities, and careers.

Our curriculum is designed to do more than teach vocabulary and grammar. Through rich cultural exploration, real-life communication tasks, and authentic resources, students gain insight into the lives, values, and perspectives of people around the world. They learn to think critically, appreciate differences, and build empathy—key attributes of international-mindedness.

Classroom activities are enriched by the exploration of traditions, cuisines, festivals, and histories of Francophone and Chinese-speaking communities worldwide. Lessons incorporate multimedia resources and opportunities for cross-cultural comparisons, helping students see the connections between languages and their lived experiences. From beginner to advanced levels, students are supported and challenged through differentiated instruction that encourages curiosity and confidence. Language learning strengthens cognitive skills while fostering intercultural understanding—preparing students to live, learn, and work across borders.

By studying Chinese or French, students at American Gulf School don’t just acquire a new language—they develop the mindset and skills to thrive in a connected, globalized world.
